DATA TRANSMISSION MEDIA (DTM)

A significant element in an Electronic Security System (ESS) is the data transmission media (DTM), which carries information from sensors, entry control devices, and video components to the display and assessment equipment.

Simply put, the DTM links remote equipment with the Security Center. An effective DTM circuit ensures rapid and reliable transmission of data, is resistant to compromise, and is conducive to rapid fault detection and repair.

A number of different types of DTM are used depending on the type and distance of signal being transmitted. The types of DTM found in an ESS are wire line, coaxial cable, fiber optic, and radio frequency (RF) transmission.

Installation of DTM between remote protected areas and the Security Center is generally considered to be site preparation work. Putting multiple signals on a single circuit is cost effective because it reduces the amount of cabling required. It is very effective when components are located in close proximity to each other.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ESS Installation Inspection Requirement Manual, ...fiber is the preferred DTM for ESS, unless there are justifiable economic or technical reasons for using other types of DTM.”
